The way of working together in this large group is very much inﬂuenced by the group analytic tradition (Foulkes, 1964; Kreeger, 1975) – the program is offered in association with the Institute of Group Analysis. As with group analytic large groups, all sit in a circle and talk about whatever they want to talk about, and this will inevitably include the sense they are making of the program and its research method. The large group on the program differs in some respects from the usual group analytic one in that no one takes the role of group conductor.
To contribute to knowledge is thus to engage in this movement. It becomes an ethical responsibility to negotiate one’s position in argument with those taking different positions rather than excluding the alternative. This involves justifying one’s beliefs to others in one’s research community as well as to those in other research communities. Williams links such processes of justiﬁcation to ones of differentiation, since justifying a methodology always involves differentiating it from others. The result is a methodology consisting of continual argument with its inevitable dynamics of inclusion and exclusion, reﬂecting patterns of power relations.
From the complex responsive processes perspective, it is not possible for committed groups of people to intentionally change the widespread patterning of their interaction. All they can change is their own interactions, and from this the widespread patterning will emerge in ways that they cannot intend or fully understand. ) The aim of the method is, therefore, not one of changing social ‘wholes’ but of making sense of the ‘live’ experience of interaction (see another volume in this series, Shaw and Stacey, 2005).
